I am sharing the story and details of our free-form skylight project at CST Metro Station – an endeavor we are truly proud of.
This project centers around what is likely India’s first free-form skylight, a ground-breaking design set in the historic CST Square of Mumbai. The skylight’s fluid, sculptural form is not only aesthetically striking but also deeply respectful of its surroundings. Placed amidst the heritage architecture of CST, we believe it will become a new landmark of its own – a modern monument complementing the iconic structures in the area. It allows natural light to pour into the entrance below, creating an inviting public space while symbolizing the fusion of innovation with history.
The design of this skylight was curated by our Founder and CEO, Mahesh Pandit, who has been a true pioneer in innovative architectural solutions in India. He envisioned this project based on a one liner brief given by the client – Make something that would enhance the beauty of this monumental place. The result is a one-of-a-kind structure, achieved through advanced parametric design and precision engineering, that showcases the very best of what our company strives for. Our team at Good Windows turned an ambitious concept into reality, delivering an inspiring piece of architecture that stands out for its elegance and technical achievement.
In-spite of being a Government project—which are normally restrictive in terms of freedom of design and budget—this project was an exception. We were given a free hand to design and also a modest budget to work on. This is an ALL Aluminium structure that is designed to last for at least a few more generations to come.
Good Windows strongly believed that CST Square deserved something far beyond the ordinary. This outcome has been a source of pride for us, as it demonstrates that innovation and cost-effectiveness can go hand in hand.
For context, Good Windows has been at the forefront of bespoke architectural solutions for over 23 years. We specialize in custom skylights, windows, facades, and structural glass installations, and each project we undertake is unique in its design and execution. This CST free-form skylight is a continuation of that legacy – pushing boundaries and crafting tailor-made solutions. In fact, we are currently the only company in India with the capability to design, manufacture, and install a free-form skylight of this complexity entirely in-house. This project has already sparked interest from other parts of the country; we have several proposals under consideration for similar free-form skylights in different cities, inspired by the success of the CST installation.
One of the projects that truly displays the brilliance and capacity of our company is the Large Skylight over the Civil Court Metro Station in Pune, which is recognized as one of the largest and deepest underground metro stations in India. The skylight we designed and executed there is not only a technical marvel but also the Largest overhead metro station Skylight in India. It stands as a benchmark in precision engineering and architectural glazing, showcasing our ability to combine scale, beauty, and functionality seamlessly.
We are humbled and grateful for the opportunity to contribute something so innovative to Mumbai’s cityscape. Our vision was to create not just a functional skylight, but a piece of art that inspires onlookers and sets a new benchmark for design. Standing beneath this sweeping glass structure and seeing the sunlight filter through, one truly feels the impact of what creative engineering can achieve. We hope that this story of persistence, creativity, and innovation resonates with your readers and inspires further appreciation for forward-thinking design in public projects.
